Washington DC Voting Rights March
Kesh Ladduwahetty is Chair of DC for Democracy:
It's been nothing short of a historic week for DC for Democracy and the District of Columbia. This Monday, on DC Emancipation Day, despite dangerous wind gusts and rain, thousands of us marched to the Capitol to demand our rightful vote in the People's House. Even the mainstream media had to acknowledge it was the largest demonstration for DC Voting Rights in three decades. Then today, as if on cue, the House passed HR 1905, granting the District a real vote for the first time ever. With the firm support of the Democratic leadership, It was more or less a party-line vote, 241 to 177, with just 22 principled Republicans breaking ranks to vote Aye. Once again, the Democratic Party has proven itself to be the party of civil rights and real democracy.

We at DC4D are deeply appreciative of the selfless support we have received from Jim Dean, Tom Hughes, Charles Chamberlain, and Sheri Divers at DFA. And we are indebted to our DFA allies around the country for their unstinting support: from San Francisco to New York City; Birmingham, AL to Columbia, MO; Salt Lake City, UT to Louisville, KY; Pittsburg, PA to Bettendorf, IA; Bloomington, IN to Overland Park, KS. Our DFA brothers and sisters called and emailed their Representatives to urge them to support the DC Voting Rights Act -- and the great majority of them did.

DFA friends, we could not have done this without you! Now the battle moves on to the Senate, and we will need you again soon. In return, we will happily serve as your representatives on Capitol Hill. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership!

I just want to announce that the domaine registration for
democracyfordc is available. It would be nice if someone connected with DFA and DC would claim it and my son didn't have to keep up the registration. That's

Soldier: Honor troops like Va. Tech dead
By ALISA TANG, Associated Press Writer 57 minutes ago
KABUL, Afghanistan - An Army sergeant complained in a rare opinion article that the U.S. flag flew at half-staff last week at the largest U.S. base in Afghanistan for those killed at Virginia Tech but the same honor is not given to fallen U.S. troops here and in Iraq.
In the article issued Monday by the public affairs office at Bagram military base north of Kabul, Sgt. Jim Wilt lamented that his comrades' deaths have become a mere blip on the TV screen, lacking the "shock factor" to be honored by the Stars and Stripes as the deaths at Virginia Tech were.
"I find it ironic that the flags were flown at half-staff for the young men and women who were killed at VT, yet it is never lowered for the death of a U.S. service member," Wilt wrote.
He noted that Bagram obeyed President Bush's order last week that all U.S. flags at federal locations be flown at half-staff through April 22 to honor 32 people killed at Virginia Tech
...
"I think it is sad that we do not raise the bases' flag to half-staff when a member of our own task force dies," Wilt said.
According to the Defense Department, 315 U.S. service members have died in and around Afghanistan since the U.S.-led offensive that toppled the Taliban regime in late 2001, 198 of them in combat.NATO's International Security Assistance Force said that the flags of all its troop-contributing nations are flown at half-staff for about 72 hours after the service member's death "as a mark of respect when there is an ISAF fatality."
Sgt. 1st Class Dean Welch, who works with Wilt at the U.S.-led coalition public affairs office, said the essay is a "soldier's commentary, not the view of the coalition and not the view of the U.S. forces."
Welch added that such outspoken opinion pieces are rare.
...
Way to go DC and House. I'll be watching with great interest what the Senate does.
Our flags should be permanently at half mast until this abomination is out of the WH and out of Iraq.
much ado today :-) bbl
while the thread topic is great, I take issue that DFA is constantly helping organizations in areas that are ALREADY BLUE.
DC and NOVA are blue, folks.
So stop tooting the horn about DFA being there to help.
We need help down in our area of VA that is seeing a lot of rethugs retiring/
This fall we have major elections for the house and senate in the state of va.
We should be helping down here.
So please save me from thanking DFA when the area from wence the are is BLUE.
unless I get an email stating that I do not contribute to DFA activities as was sent our recently.
I believe when Howard ran he encouraged us to make a difference and change things at the local level. Well we can't do it all my ourselves, or myself.
and am still waiting to see if DFA will show up at the TBA conference.
I have talked to Jim and am awaiting his call on this.

THIS is where are ‘bought off’ media – cable and newspapers STOPPED.
And none of them reporting his following comments…like… I believe the war at this stage can only be won diplomatically, politically and economically." ….there is still a chance to change course”….
TIM RUSSERT – just sickened me that the ‘likable guy’ played the little clip of “the war is lost” from Harry and then – snapped it off, like all the others. Went on to say that “he’s in trouble’ and other guest said “even the Democrats are unhappy with him’.WRONG! You teleprompter Republican Propogandists. By not telling the whole truth – you are LYING to the American people. AGAIN. But we’re on to you. This one is going to backfire big time! You just keep your underhanded swiftboating going - O.K.? Just keep bringing it to our attention..... MOST of us are saying "Way to go Harry! Finally a 'man' who can stand up and tell Bush the truth...and could possibly even STOP Bush and save hundreds or more of our beloved soldiers lives!!!
The MEDIA is helping Bush - let more soldiers die. I thought many of them apologized for blindly beleving Bush and pushing us into the war in Iraq.
"We should have done more investigation". "WE should have checked our facts and QUESTIONED". Insanity -
WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK, HARRY! And God help any Democrat putting you down.
WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK, HARRY! And God help any Democrat putting you down.
I LOVE HARRY REID
and I think Bush is holding onto Gonzo as a lightning rod so they don't go after Rove.
Linda (#6) I hope you don't assume that ALL of New York State is blue, either. While we're represented by 2 Democrats (no comment)in the Senate, much of the state is very rural and very red. Congressional district NY 29th is a VERY red district. That's why the Rural Democrats are banding together to make some changes. That's why we need support for Eric Massa, to show these dyed-in-the-woollies that a Democrat CAN be thoughtful, fiscally responsible, and supportive of our armed forces.
You are right, we ALL need to work hard for good candidates in every contested district.

I hadn't seen that yet. I love it. I was watching the Apprentice last night and was thinking that maybe I shouldn't support Trump's show since he is a rabid Repub. Now I feel better about watching that crap.
10.

The true is that the airwave media and other forms of media wanted -- no demanded -- the war on behalf of their big conglomerat corporations. They knew the facts were lies. I did, my husband did, Kucinich did, millions who marched did. But the media didn't????????
TV media promoted it with the likes of CNN's playing of the Indian war drums repeatedly every day. I can't wait to see the airing of Bill Moyer's "Buyin the War" about all the war lies Wednesday night on PBS and all the repeats it will have. Ought to be required viewing for every voter and student.
10. The Media is the Messenger for the Neocon and Corporate Message!
The Talking Heads are ALL Bought and Paid for.
C--Span is Corporate-Spin.
Tim Russert is a Corporate Swiftboater.
Fox may be the most honest of the Swiftboaters. They don't try to hide the Corporate Agenda.
well, folks, today I took the plunge: i donated to John Edwards' campaign, and it brought a smile to my face!
i'm still hoping that Al Gore jumps in, and if he does he will have my full support because I believe he has the FULL complement of leadership abilities, experience and vision our country needs.
but Edwards comes closer than the others on all three counts, especially with his deep understanding of the rippling, crippling effects of poverty in the lives of far too many Americans.
if you want to join me and him in remaking our country (and get some good music, to boot!) click:
https://johnedwards.com/action/contribut...
here's part of the letter that prompted my donation (i sense the fundraising finesse of Joe Trippi behind this):
Dear friend,
My name is John Land. I'm proud to serve as the Democratic Leader in the State Senate of South Carolina. I want to talk to you about how, you, I and John Edwards are going to revitalize rural America and change the political map.
...
I support John Edwards because he's the first national candidate in years who really takes rural America seriously—and he's got a solid, bold plan to help turn things around. I know John speaks from the heart about the issues that affect my community—because this is his community too. He grew up here, and people in places like South Carolina will listen to someone who actually understands what life here is all about.
So what can we do to change the map? We can help John's campaign spread the word. I know that when rural voters learn about who John is and what he would actually do, even the reddest counties will start to turn blue. That's why I just donated $100 bucks to help fund John's outreach to rural voters. Now, I'm asking you to join me by chipping in whatever you can afford at:
www.johnedwards.com/changethemap
Last week John launched his national rural outreach effort right here in SC. He was greeted by overflow crowds in small rural diners, many of whom drove great distances to finally have a conversation with a national leader who is ready to fight for the rural way of life.
You can read John's full plan on the website, but here's the highlights of what the plan would do:
* Restore economic fairness to rural America by helping small businesses thrive and grow.
* Create a new energy economy in rural America by establishing the New Energy Economy Fund to jumpstart renewable energies.
* Create fairness for family farmers by supporting strong antitrust enforcement, capping farm subsidies for corporate farms and other reforms.
* Strengthen rural schools by improving pay for teachers in rural and other hard-to-staff schools.
* Improve health care in rural America by rewriting the unfair Medicare and Medicaid funding formulas, covering the 9 million uninsured rural Americans and establishing a nationwide network of public clinics and hospitals.
* Rid rural America of methamphetamines by improving enforcement, restricting key ingredients and expanding programs that successfully treat addicts.
...
Like I said, I just kicked in $100 to help John's campaign get their message to rural voters, and I really hope you'll join me. Please pitch in what you can today, at:
www.johnedwards.com/changethemap
Thanks for standing with rural America, and thanks for changing the map.
Sincerely,
--John Land

P.S. If you chip in $50 or more, you'll receive a free advance copy of the not-yet-released CD "Moneyland". "Moneyland" tells the story of the plight of rural America, through a collection of recordings, both old and new, from legendary country and bluegrass recording artists, including: The Del McCoury Band, Merle Haggard, Welch, Marty Stuart, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby & the Fairfield Four, Mac Wiseman, Patty Loveless, and more.
You can hear clips of some of the songs from "Moneyland" here: www.johnedwards.com/changethemap
Hi Monica,
That's the first I've heard of democracyfordc! Any reason why your son registered that domaine name?
Kesh
Seashell,
I'd love to know which state you live in -- perhaps you can help us lobby for the bill's passage in the Senate!
