Watch The War Tapes!

Written by: Sheri Divers on Feb 16, 2007 6:00 PM EST

Linked to groups: DFA Blog Network

All month, Democracy for America members have kept the pressure on both the President and Congress to not only stop the escalation of the Iraq War, but end the occupation and bring our brave men and women home.

Today Congress will vote on an anti-escalation resolution with strong bipartisan support, The War Tapesbut that alone is not enough. We must continue to build the movement demanding binding action and we will not stop until every soldier is home.

Join us all next week at one of hundreds of screenings of the award-winning documentary The War Tapes and after the movie send postcards to Congress.

Find a screening near you:

http://www.dfalink.com/wartapes

DFA members are hosting screenings everywhere. Thirty-three people have RSVPed for a screening in Davenport, Iowa. Thirty-four in Asheville, North Carolina. Forty people in Austin, Texas. Change for Northern Kentucky has partnered with nearby groups and expects over 200 people at their screening. The interest is so hot that AM940 WINZ in Florida is giving away tickets to one of six screenings in Miami. DFA members in all fifty states are coming together and by the end of February ten of thousands of postcards will be delivered to members of Congress. You can join them at a screening near you:

http://www.dfalink.com/wartapes

Straight from the front lines in Iraq, The War Tapes is the first war movie filmed by soldiers themselves. The film is powerful and moving, conveying both the passion and mindset of American soldiers and the incredible human and community cost of war. You will leave this movie more motivated than ever to end the occupation and bring our troops home. If you want to know more, see the trailer or read the reviews here:

Thank you for working to end the War in Iraq!

This movie takes place in a war zone and is shot by soldiers themselves. It contains adult language, war violence and a brief moment of graphic nudity.

Great news. It can work. Senator Altimirano wasn't sure about Impeachment, but in the end, he voted for it.

146. DANIEL ROONEY -- Dr. Sami Solanki....British professor David Bellamy

Greenhouse Gases, Not Solar Activity, Cause of Global Warming

KATLENBURG-LINDAU, Germany, August 3, 2004 (ENS) - Solar activity affects the climate but plays only a minor role in the current global warming, a German-Finnish team of scientists has found.

Since the middle of the last century, the Sun has been in a phase of unusually high activity, shown by frequent occurrences of sunspots, gas eruptions, and radiation storms.

The influence of the Sun on the Earth was believed to be one cause of the global warming observed since 1900, along with the emission of the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, from the combustion of coal, gas, and oil.

But Professor Sami Solanki, solar physicist and director at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, is not convinced that the increased activity of the Sun is responsible for global warming.

Scientists offered cash to dispute climate study

On Monday, another Exxon-funded organisation based in Canada will launch a review in London which casts doubt on the IPCC report. Among its authors are Tad Murty, a former scientist who believes human activity makes no contribution to global warming. Confirmed VIPs attending include Nigel Lawson and David Bellamy, who believes there is no link between burning fossil fuels and global warming.

Ricky Martin defends anti-Bush gesture

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Ricky Martin, who was a headliner at the 2001 inauguration ball for President George W. Bush, has a message for the American commander in chief about war.

At a recent concert, the 35-year-old singer stuck up his middle finger when he sang the president's name in his song "Asignatura Pendiente," which includes the words, "a photo with Bush." The gesture last Friday prompted cheers from thousands of fans in the San Juan stadium.

On Thursday, the Puerto Rican heartthrob repeated his criticism of the Iraq war and explained his changed position on Bush.

"My convictions of peace and life go beyond any government and political agenda and as long as I have a voice onstage and offstage, I will always condemn war and those who promulgate it," Martin said about his action in an e-mail statement sent to The Associated Press via a spokesman.

I'm all for efficiently maintaining a much smaller military than we now have. Large enough to defend US, but small enough that chickenhawks like Bush and Cheney camn't attack sovereign nations without cause, or deploy them in some bogus "war on terrorism"

Dear Friend:

Today, I am pleased to report the House of Representatives concluded
the first substantive debate and passed a bipartisan resolution on the
misguided Iraq War. The resolution, which passed by a vote of 246-182,
reaffirms American and Congressional support for the men and women
serving in the Armed Forces in Iraq, but expresses disapproval of the
President's decision to deploy an additional 20,000 troops to the country.
I supported this resolution with the great hope that the process would
signal an important step towards the end of the Iraq War.

This war was ill-conceived, ill-planned, and so ill-executed that it has
cost our nation almost $400 billion dollars, ignited a Civil War and
further destabilized an already fragile Middle East Region. Most
importantly, this war has resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 of our
bravest men and women and over 23,000 casualties.

Sadly, 23 of our own New Mexican troops have lost their lives, and over
200 wounded. It has been with a heavy heart that I have spoken with
their families, attended their services, and visited them on their road to
recovery at Walter Reed Military Hospital. I am proud of them and proud
of our state's strong tradition of military service. They made the ultimate
commitment to serve our nation.

These men and women enlist in the Armed Forces trusting that their
Commander-in-Chief will send them into harm's way only as a last
resort, and only with a clear plan for victory. On both of these counts the
President has failed our soldiers. That is why I believe it's time for us to
redeploy our troops and redeploy them now.

Today, the new Congress capitalized on the opportunity to send a loud,
resolute message to the President that his misguided judgment must
cease; that this war will now be subject to intense scrutiny and
accountability by this Congress; and that he must heed the will of the
American people, the overwhelming majority of whom now strongly
disapprove of his handling of this war.

We must not be a security blanket for an ineffectual government.
However, the President's escalation plan is exactly that, asking little of
Iraq's government, while putting the lives of our soldiers squarely in the
crosshairs of Sunni extremists and Shiite militias.

Our soldiers have done everything that has been asked of them, and
more. They have served bravely and honorably. They have trained Iraqi
forces to the best of their abilities. But they cannot be asked to calm the
sectarian violence ripping Iraq apart without leadership from Iraqi
politicians. Yet the President is asking exactly that.

It is time to move our troops out of the middle of this Civil War.

We are now engaged in a dangerous game of chicken with Iran, based on the same sort of spurious claims and strategy of focused distraction that marked the run-up to the Iraq War. It’s an ongoing shell trick of changing mission, altering the enemy, and puddle jumping from fear to fear.

It keeps Americans from focusing on Bush’s horrendous domestic policies, the near-bankruptcy of the U.S., an administration of endemic corruption and nepotism, and a foreign policy that has advanced no further than the tactics of the Roman Empire, except that the Romans were most often led into wars by leaders whose ruthlessness was at least matched by their competence.

All we have are leaders who excel at nursing their own egos, power, and financial well-being, with the rest of us being so much cannon fodder.

And their only real talent is the ability to endlessly lie and deceive. As Carl Bernstein recently noted in a "Frontline" interview: "I think what we're talking about with the Bush administration is a far different matter in which disinformation, misinformation and unwillingness to tell the truth -- a willingness to lie both in the Oval Office, in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, in the office of the vice president, the vice president himself -- is something that I have never witnessed before on this scale."

Will Durst: The 14th Annual TGFTLSBIAC Awards*

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/durst/042

  • THE BEST IMPRESSION OF A SLEEPY LIZARD IN SEARCH OF A WARM ROCK AWARD: and the winner is... I'm sorry, we're all winners. The award goes to Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, edging out 6-time winner Vice President Dick Cheney.
  • THE COLLATERAL DAMAGE AWARD: goes to Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee. Sorry buddy. Nothing personal.
  • THE CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR AWARD: newcomer Connecticut Senate Candidate Ned Lamont.
  • THE IF HE WERE A HORSE, WE'D HAVE TO SHOOT HIM AWARD: a repeat recipient, Delaware Senator Joseph Biden.
  • THE "JOHN KERRY" WORST CAMPAIGN EVER AWARD: although California Gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides gave her a run for her money, this year's award goes to Congresswoman Katherine Harris for her Florida Senate campaign that to call faulty from the get-go would be generous.
  • THE SMILE SO TIGHT YOU CAN HEAR THE ENAMEL CRACKING AWARD: she's been working for this for years, how 'bout a hand for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in an upset over defending champ Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
  • THE YOU CAN'T KEEP A GRASPING RAVENOUSLY AMBITIOUS MAN DOWN AWARD: and the winner is... Alf's dad, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman.
  • THE NOBODY RETURNS MY CALLS ANYMORE AWARD: In a runaway, former Congressman Mark Foley overtakes early favorites former Congressmen Bob Ney and Duke Cunningham.
  • THE MOST IMPORTANT MAN IN AMERICA AWARD: For the 7th year in a row, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens' doctor.
  • THE LET'S SETTLE GLOBAL DISPUTES BY HOLDING HANDS AND SINGING KUMBAYA AWARD: holding steady at 1% in polls that sport a 4% margin of error: Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich.
  • THE COMEDIC TIMING OF AN END TABLE AWARD: It's a tie! Hugo Chavez and John Kerry.
  • THE PROOF THAT LAWYERS EAT THEIR YOUNG AWARD: sweeping the field with multiple nominations is Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
  • THE CLOCK IS TICKING AWARD: finds Iraqi President Nouri Al-Maliki narrowly defeating last year's winner Scooter Libby.
  • POP GOES THE WEASEL HEAD AWARD: sadly, this award posthumously goes to Saddam Hussein's brother.
  • THE UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT OF PAYBACK AWARD: is given to the entire Republican Party Congressional Caucus for whining about the Democratic Party cutting them out of the legislative process.
  • THE REALITY TRUMPS FICTION AWARD: in a crowded field, the clear winner is Mister Cash in the Freezer himself, Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson.
  • THE "HOIST ON YOUR OWN PETARD" LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: goes to, and he couldn't be more deserving, Tom DeLay.

Fred actually I DO have a dog in the fight -- lost my womb at a fairly early age (40-ish) to 'pre-cervical cancer' condition or so they said -- looking back I would have greatly preferred not to have gone through all that if a shot were available

-----------------

My sympathies.

This is not a "cancer vaccine"  it is a virus vaccine.  The virus does not directly cause cancer.  The warts the virus causes can become cancerous.

First of all, I am not for or against the vaccine.  I am only against government using the threat of refusing public education to leverage its purchase and use.  How do we know what the long term effect of the vaccine won't be worse than the disease.  Look at hormone therapy.

Did you get cancer in spite of yearly PAPs? Since a tiny percentage of those who get PAP virus get cancer, there must be other factors? Are drug companies or CDC at all interested in those factors, or do they just blame it all on "genetics" - a cop out in my opinion.

What would think of a virus test that would tell you if a male or female has the PAP virus, and then only take the vaccine if you want to have sex with someone who tested positive?  Why don't they develop such a test, instead of innoculating non-infectious virgins with the vaccine?

How do we know the 70 or 80 other strains of PAP won't evolve to replace predominant strains, if the innoculated strains do not proliferate?

Last Friday night a friend called and told me that Barack Obama had posted a sort of pre-announcement of the start of his presidential campaign on his website. I immediately cued it up and within ten minutes was writing a column blasting him for ripping off half of his campaign speech from a smorgasbord of '04 Democratic candidates -- then stopped when I realized that I'd already written exactly that column about Hillary Clinton's kickoff speech a few weeks ago.

So I went back and watched the speech again, and I actually felt chills run up my spine. A few weeks ago, Hillary Clinton's launch speech ripped off John Kerry and the DLC with its "Let's have a conversation" theme; Obama, meanwhile, went the Howard Dean route, nicking "A campaign to take America back" from Dean and RFK Jr., among others. The fact that Hillary, like Kerry, is set up as the DLC-acolyte candidate while Obama, like Dean, is set up as the antiwar candidate suggests a kind of permanent template for the Democratic primary process. Maybe soon the race for the Democratic primary will be like Everytown USA's annual high school production of A Streetcar Named Desire, where every year they find a new antiwar Blanche and a new pro-corporate Stanley. The faces are different, the lines are the same.

.....The same hydra headed monster that kills youngsters at a disco in Israel also kills poor Sikh and Hindu families in Kashmir and other parts of India. The same monster massacres young children in Beslan as well as wipe out entire families, their futures and their loved ones' lives right here in New York. The same monster gets on a double decker bus near Picaddilly in London and kills a bunch of office workers going to work.......

-------------------

Robert, what do think of the Israeli practice collective punishment, arresting family members and neighbors of suicide bombers indefinitely, without charges?  And the practice of knocking down 20 or 30 houses of people in the neighborhood where the bomber came from, on short notice, often crushing old people and babies to death?

Do you think such Nazi-type behavior discourages suicide bombing? Or encourages it?

What do think of Israelis dismembering innocent men, women and children in Lebanon with carpet bombs?  This has been done in areas where there is no combat?

Did you know that in 1955 in retaliation of a murder of an Israeli woman and two children, Ariel Sharon surrounded 45 houses in Jordan, pinned down the occupants with machine gun fire, while they detonated the occupants, killing 69 civilians?  It was called the Qibya massacre.  Ben Gurion was aware of the order and knew it was happening.

Tammy Duckworth's husband being deployed to Iraq

Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO — The husband of Tammy Duckworth is being deployed to Iraq, where his wife lost her legs in a helicopter crash before making a bid for Congress.

Brian Bowlsbey, 39, a longtime Illinois Guardsman, has not been sent there previously.

Although he did not volunteer for the mission, Bowlsbey, a major who was recently assigned to a new unit, said he did not consider seeking an exemption to allow him to remain with his wife.

"It's not something that we're really eager to do, but it's part of the job and we've trained for it for 19 years," he said yesterday, noting that he long ago fulfilled his requirement of four years of service as an officer. "If you believe in the United States you stay in and you keep doing it and you accept the risk."

Scars of war
VA, Congress can't neglect the mental health of returning vets.

02/15/07 04:02:53

Since 2001, more than 1 million Americans have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 20,000 have been injured. Many others have engaged in brutal fighting, or witnessed gruesome bloodshed, such as car bombings and the deaths of fellow soldiers and civilians that leave deep psychological wounds.

War is never pretty, but the nature of the current conflict means that military men and women are returning home with serioous traumas. That demands an appropriate response from the Department of Veterans Affairs and other mental health agencies. But it is far from clear that returning soldiers are receiving the help they need and deserve.

Recent news reports have revealed wide disparities in the care that veterans receive when they return home. In 2005, nearly 100 VA clinics nationwide lacked staffing by trained mental health professionals. Spending for each patient receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment also varied widely nationwide, even after accounting for the higher cost of medical care in urban areas.

Veterans returning to rural areas are the most underserved, according to the news reports. That's not surprising. Rural residents, regardless of military status, have long had their mental health needs ignored. Clearly, more outreach and help is needed for these returning soldiers.

Several medical journals and media outlets have warned about veterans returning with an unusually high incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD, a diagnosis first developed in the Vietnam War, causes nightmares and flashbacks that can leave people debilitated, sometimes with thoughts of suicide.

VA officials say they have responded with mental health services that are equal to or greater than those offered by anyone else, and this may well be true. Earlier this month, VA Secretary Jim Nicholson announced the creation of 23 new Readjustment Counseling Service Centers in two years. Slightly more than 200 are now operating around the country.

Despite the expansion, there are questions about whether the VA provides adequate staffing for some centers, forcing veterans to wait for appointments. Democrats in Congress surveyed 60 centers last year and found that one-third lacked adequate staff.

To the extent they avoid turning this issue into a partisan brawl, Congress and the VA need to closely examine the agency's current mental health services and see where they can improve outreach and care. Regardless of where you come down on the war, there should be no disagreement that returning troops deserve a fighting chance of overcoming the horrors they've endured.

“Vulture fund” companies buy up the debt of poor countries at cheap prices, and then demand payments much higher than the original amount of the debt, often taking poor countries to court when they cannot afford to repay.

Investigative journalist Greg Palast reports on one company that has won the right to collect $20 million from the government of Zambia after buying its debt for $4 million. In his recent State of the Union address, President Bush declared the United States was taking on the challenges of global hunger, poverty and disease, and urged support for debt relief, which he called the best hope for eliminating poverty.
But what exactly are wealthy nations doing to reduce the debt of impoverished countries?

Today we take a close look at companies known as "vulture funds." Vulture fund companies buy up the debt of poor countries at cheap prices, and then demand payments much higher than the original amount of the debt, often taking poor countries to court when they cannot afford to repay.

For an in-depth look at this issue, we turn to a BBC Newsnight documentary by investigative reporter Greg Palast. Greg Palast’s BBC report on vulture funds. Today a high court judge in London ruled on the case that a vulture fund can extract more than $20 million from Zambia for a debt which it bought for just $4 million. To tell us more about this case and more we now turn to Greg Palast.

Ricky Martin Defends Obscene Gesture Made During Puerto Rico Show As He Sang Bush's Name

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=2880681&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Feb 16, 2007 (AP)— Ricky Martin, who was a headliner at the 2001 inauguration ball for President George W.

CARNIVAL IN GERMANYIslam No Longer Taboo

By Philipp Wittrock

In light of the Muhammad cartoon scandal in 2006, carnival jokesters in Germany went easy on Islam. This year, Muslim satire will return to at least one parade.

Polemical, provocative and striking -- such is the nature of carnival parades in Germany.

"Peace Between Religions is an Illusion"

This year, though, Jacques Tilly has some catching up to do. "The clash of civilizations is still high up on the agenda of world politics," the artist says. And this time, it's fair game. On Feb. 19, Muslims will be fair game again.

"We're going to address the topic to be sure," Jürgen Rieck, director of the Düsseldorf Carnival Committee, says. Rieck says the intention is to "be clear" without going below the belt. "One of the floats is really great -- right on the edge," Tilly promises -- but refuses to say more. Strict secrecy is Düsseldorf's policy -- so none of the worriers can interfere.

Only one motif has become public to date: A Hamas militant and an orthodox Jew hug each other while a Shiite cleric and an Indian cuddle each other and an Indian and a Pakistani dance together. It's all too cuddly to be true Tilly, and the apparently conciliatory gestures are immediately unmasked: The display's motto is "Peace Between Religions --- The Greatest of Illusions."

Controversy is no stranger to carnival. In 2005, parade organizers were threatened by Catholics offended by a portrayal of conservative Cardinal Joachim Meisner. He was shown preparing to burn a woman at the stake. The puppet of the woman featured the words: "I had an abortion." Last year, a George W. Bush float was banned. Members of Düsseldorf's city council had gotten wind of the motif and intervened.

Democracy for America Endorses Nine in Chicago Aldermanic Races Released on: February 16, 2007

CHICAGO, IL -- On behalf of the progressive grassroots, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed nine outstanding government reformers in the Chicago municipal elections today at Chicago City Hall.

http://www.democracyforamerica.com/press

“They are true reformers with the courage to fight for progressive values. Although their political platforms are diverse, they share a commitment to affordable housing, full funding of public schools, neighborhood revitalization, honest government, fair elections, a liveable wage, smart growth and increased community involvement in the decision making process,” said DFA chair Jim Dean. “With great pride and enthusiasm, DFA endorses these nine candidates who share our belief in people-powered politics and will move Chicago forward.”

Edgewater/ Rogers Park DFA leader Sandra Verthein agrees, “Chicagoans have a choice to make. We need open, accountable government that serves the interests of the common good and treats all people fairly and with dignity. We know these nine government reformers will be excellent aldermen.”

The following DFA-List endorsed aldermanic candidates enjoy the enthusiastic support of activists from local groups such as Edgewater/Rogers Park DFA and the Loop DFA:

David Askew (Ward 2)
Greg Brewer (Ward 50)
Joe Moore (Ward 49)
Leroy Jones (Ward 21)
Manuel Flores (Ward 1)
Michele Smith (Ward 43)
Ricardo Munoz (Ward 22)
Sandi Jackson (Ward 7)
Toni Preckwinkle (Ward 4)

The nine candidates graciously accepted their endorsements, including incumbent Joe Moore who commented, “I'm grateful for DFA's endorsement.  The people- powered politics that DFA represents is long over due at Chicago's City Hall.  I look forward to returning to the City Council with all of DFA's endorsed candidates, when we can bring a more democratic process to the City Council.”

Democracy for America, which was founded by Howard Dean in 2004, is a political action committee dedicated to building a grassroots network of socially progressive and fiscally responsible activists running for all levels of office – from the school board to the Presidency. DFA is empowering everyday Americans to reform their political system.

Talking about opinion and being sceptical.I'm of the opinion that the US military is not what it is all made out be.And yes, to be politically correct, I support the men and women who make up the troops. It's the military organization and it's leadership I'm talking about. We spend half a trillion dollars a year on this organization. And what are we getting for that?Sorry, all this talk about the surge is like band aid talk.A half a trillion dollar a year machine isn't able to pacify Iraq? So, I'm not impressed with the US military.

Today on Washington Week in Review

The question was asked:

What position will the Democrats be in if the 'surge' works?

Seems like we are going to be in Iraq for a long time.

If the 'surge' works, we are welcome to stay.
If it doesn't we are doomed to stay to make it work.

The Iraqi army knew it hat no chance to the American firepower.
So they dispersed.

Same thing happening now. The 'insurgents' had amassed some power by concentrating.
Once you concentrate your forces you are an easy target for an overwhelming firepower.

So you must disperse to survive.

Fighting terrorism with supererior firepower doesn't work.

It's not a job of the military. Because the military is organized to fight a concentrated army.
Terrorism's strenght is it's diversity.

Asymmetric warfare is a term that describes a military situation in which two belligerents of unequal power or capacity of action, interact and take advantage of the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and their enemies. This interaction often involves strategies and tactics outside the bounds of conventional warfare.

Libby's cynical defense

http://www.salon.com/opinion/blumenthal/2007/02/15/libby_trial/index_np.html

...one of Scooter Libby's old mentors, a prominent Washington attorney and Republican with experience going back to the Watergate scandal and with intimate ties to neoconservatives, implored him repeatedly to stop covering up for Vice President Cheney and to cut a deal with the special prosecutor. Yet another distinguished Washington lawyer and personal friend of Libby's, privy to the mentor's counsel, reinforced his urgent advice and offered to provide Libby with introductions to former prosecutors who might help guide him. But Libby rebuffed them. He refused to listen. He insisted on the trial.
