We're still in testing -- still working out the kinks -- so this is not a big "official" launch, but if you haven't joined yet, please join Deanlink:http://deanlink.deanforamerica.com
Deanlink gives you a way to find other Dean supporters and for them to find you. You can enter your name, a picture if you want (there's some great Dean rally pictures there), your volunteering interests, and your political interests. Your address, phone number, and email are not shared, but you can use Deanlink emails to email others who have joined.
The Dean campaign is about breaking down barriers and bringing people together in a new American community -- and engaging Americans again in the political process. Deanlink allows you to find other Dean supporters in your area to set up Get Local events and invite to your Dean Get Local events. It also allows you to reach out to other other Dean supporters with similar political interests and work together on organizing around those interests. Even though we're still in testing, we've heard three stories already of people finding other supporters through Deanlink to help organize Get Local events. My nearest member is 19 miles away, my furthest is 113 miles.
We've already used the to get out the vote on the ASMCE Straw Poll running on line right now. I sent it out to the 30 people who have Deanlinked me, and then I got at least 3 emails back around with the same wording, and even saw the wording later used on the blog. It was Neil Sullivan's wording to begin though.

A few of us will be the Deanlink Defense Enforcers, who will help spead rapid response messages either from DFF or HQ.

When I search for people near my zip code, it's brings up a page that starts with people about 15 miles away and on up.
In order to see the people who are actually in my neck of the woods, I have to do one of the other searches, like "people interested in tabling", or "people interested in the economy". This then pops up over a page full of people who are zero miles away. Hmmm.
Otherwise, it's cool! I encourage people to put up a picture if they can, just so people who already know you can be sure you're the right person :)
We would be happy just to find others in the same country.
wow, watching dick gephardt on c-span, I realize just how poorly this guy is at one-on-one. Thank goodness Dean is a candidate with personality and the ability to relate with everyday people.
On the search utility, I would like to be able to search for people by state or even by county. Those of us living near state borders might find someone 50 miles away, but they are in another state. I would like to be able to limit my search results to people who live in my state or county.
Also, in that vein, is their a way to organize our various Deanlinks into groups? For example, what if I want to send out a message tailored to a specific subgroup of the people I am linked to, say for example only my Deanlinks in Mississippi, or only my Deanlinks in my county? Is there a way I can set up my own lists?
I think this is a great program.

Count me among those who think that DeanLink is cool, but don't really get the point of it. Should I link to other people in my city? What exactly is accomplished by doing so? I mean, I can see who's in the city *without* linking to them, so why link? Does that make sense? Is it just that the full plan for using DeanLink has not yet been revealed? Hmm...
When signing in - make sure you're using your email address that you used when you signed in and the correct password. I'm guessing that alot of the bugs will get worked out and that alot of people will be able to do more effective searches very soon - for now, just sign up and recruit and kick me off the fron page -- PLEASE!! :)
Once the search bugs get ironed out, you'll be able to link and messsage everyone in your area - or around the country! Think of the effective networks you could build. If one or two people stand out on the corner holding Dean signs - they might be thought of as kooks - but thirty is a movement that others will join - get involved and get networked.
If you see someone in your state - message them and find out what you can do together - or where you are in relation to one another. Just go do the initial sign ups and don't worry about the details yet - play with it and have some fun for a day! :)
I think DeanLinks is a wonderful tool. With the Links I have made just this weekend I have found a group of people in my county anxious to start our own MeetUps. It's too late to do that formally this weekend, but we hope to have the real deal in time for October.
I've been putting off working on this since March (one month seems to drift into another & MeetUp does not make it easy). But once I knew that we had a significant number of interested people, that got me taking action to get it going.
Lieberman is the Gore of '04, though more boring and more conservative. I would pinch my nose if I had to vote in a Bush v. Lieberman election. I'd have to vote for Lieb boy but I'd hate doing it but I'd have to cuz Bush is the scum bottom of presidential choices. I know, too, I wouldn't send a penny to Lieb nor would I work for him.
Dean on the other hand has me energized, active. I've given him dough about 5 or 6 times by now and there's more to come. Cuz he deserves it! And it's political cash well spent. Also, this early in the campaign season, I've done the most political volunteering for any presidential candidate ever. And I've campaigned for 3 other presidential campaigns before. Dean inspires, Dean excites, Dean motivates, Dean energizes, Dean activates. And there's many more, thousands upon thousands who are just like me and more are signing on daily. There's no way this people-powered tidal wave aint gonna sweep across this country and flush Bush and his corrupt cronies out of the White House in '04. It's gonna happen cuz we're all doing it together!

Okay, okay, Neil, I'm a believer! One more question, though, how do I figure out what my personal link is to use in the URL box here on the blog? When I click around I just get generic 'dashboard' links, etc.
Neil, is there a quick way to send a message to more than one deanLink at a time?

Just signed up but it won't let me log in.. anyone else having this problem?
I think it would be helpful if people could write things about their skills and abilities that might be helpful to the campaign.
For example, I speak fleunt Spanish and I think it would be helpful for other Deanistas to know that about me if they are planning an event in the Latino community.
I'm sure it would be helpful for people to know of many other special skills that each Deanista possesses.
I'm also a little confused about the purpose of Dean Link. You may need more explanatory text, because it's not particularly intuitive.
I'd like to see another category added for "Writing/Editing."
I second what others have said about having an open or "Other" category, where a person could enter unique skills they have to offer.
Put it right next to the MeetUp icon (home page and blog), and ask people to sign up for both?
that way, newcomers can pick up on it immediately.
What about a Deanlinks chatroom? Or have a link from Deanlinks to Chat for America? This would help those out there who don't have AOL IM have a means of chatting with each other in real time.

I went to the site, and it told me to "click here to get plug-in". I clicked and got told that I was "forbidden" to use that page. ??? So, I can't get the plug-in, and therefore can't chat. Boo :(
I'm on a Mac (using Netscape 7). Is that the problem?
As always people should be able to choose which login or ID's they include if they prefer to not be contacted that way!

He's registered, but the problem is that he lives in the *same* zip code. When I got his profile up on the screen, his distance read just like mine -- "miles away" with no number.
I think it's pretty important to know who's in the same zip code with us (precinct-wise especially), so I thought I'd pass this on.

Once again, once again, once again, once again, once again, you guys have ignored the teeming masses of Deaniacs OUTSIDE the U.S. We Americans Abroad would really really appreciate it if drop-down menus of U.S. states would at least include our countries. I have signed up by entering "Berlin, Germany" in the state box, but my German zip code number (10435) will make the system think I'm in the northeast. It cannot take long for a programmer to add some more fields to these boxes. Do you realize how many American tourists abroad we can approach with coordinated activities? Do you realize how incredibly memorable it would be for an American traveler to be approached by a Dean volunteer in Picadilly Circus or in front of the Brandenburg Gate? Please work on this. And while you're at it (for the thousandth time) please add international addresses to the donations page. Just because I have an address outside the U.S. doesn't make me a foreigner. There are millions of us out here. And we vote.
This is great, but we need the option to pick a foreign country. I just arrived in Madrid and plan to do some organizing once I decide on a city... probably Valencia.
