Burlington, VT – Arshad Hasan, Executive Director of Democracy for America, released the following statement after reports that Republicans want to cut social security benefits to protect tax cuts for wealthy Americans.

“Republicans will gut any program they can, no matter who it affects, all for the sake of getting just a few more wealthy Americans more tax cuts.”

“Social Security should not be on the table. Republicans have made it abundantly clear they are not serious about deficit reduction, just gutting programs Americans rely on. In fact, it’s a widely known fact that Social Security does not add one cent to the deficit. Even the patron saint of the Republican Party, Ronald Reagan, knew that.”

"Right now Republicans are proposing these cuts, and we want to be clear-- These cuts are unacceptable, no matter who is proposing them. We have said all along no deal is better than a bad deal, and this is the worst deal."

GOP insistence on giving tax dollars to the richest of the rich-- while we must make up the shortfall in our own taxes-- is the most blatant hypocrisy of any political party in Washington. The GOP deserves the contempt of every taxpayer for serving its miniscule number of greedy patrons, and further burdening the American people with taxes the rich should pay as their own, fair share. Clearly, the GOP has declared class warfare on most Americans. GOP determination to hold middle-class tax relief hostage to its demand for continued tax breaks for the rich reminds me of the Titanic-- all steerage passengers were kept below decks, at gunpoint, lest they "interfere" with putting all the wealthy passengers in lifeboats, first.

I think it's appalling that the word "entitlements" has become a dirty word. If one is entitled to something, it is not up to congress or any other body of citizens to try to take it away. That is MY money in the Social Security coffers. Congress has liberally helped themselves to it many times. I consider that a crime. I am also paying for medicare and medicaid every month with moneys deducted from said Social Security...Somehow, this doesn't make sense to me. Government taxes and taxes the taxes. One other thing. SS presented a cola of 1.7% to SS recipients. HOW MUCH DID GOVERNMENT WORKERS RECIEVE ON THEIR PLAN ??? WHY WOULD WE NOT THINK THAT ALL POLITICIANS ARE THIEVES AND PLUNDERERS? Joan Jerome Ephrata PA
